MDS and Exception Review Update 2018

CMS will be implementing significant changes to the MDS 3.0 beginning October 1, 2018. These changes will impact nearly every section of the MDS including: Section A (Idenification Information), Section C (Cognitive Pattern), Section GG (Functional Abilities and Goals), Section I (Active Diagnoses), Section J (Health Conditions), Section M (Skin Conditions), Section N (Medications), and Section O (Special Treatments, Procedures, and Programs). During this session, learn the details of the changes, best practices for implementation, and the impact of the changes on your team, and your community.

During this session, we will discuss the latest Exception Review trends. We will also discuss strategies to ensure accuracy of MDS documentation, and best practices to prepare for an Excption Review in your community.

Objectives:
Following this presentation, the participant will be able to:
* Discuss MDS changes to be implemented as of October 1, 2018
* Discuss strategies to successfully implement the October 1, 2018 MDS changes
* Discuss the most common reasons an assessment would not validate during an Exception Review
* Discuss best practices to prepare for an Exception Review, and quality assurance measures to ensure MDS documentation accuracy

Maureen Wern has been in long Term care for 40 years working in several positions from Floor Nurse to Executive Director of a 150 Bed SNF with a 75 bed AL. She founded Wern & Associates, a Long Term care consulting firm, in 1996. The firm focuses on several areas including MDS Education, Survey readiness audits, Quality Measure Management, Web Site development, Customer service Training and MDS Case Mix Management. Mrs. Wern is a nationally recognized Speaker serving as a Master Instructor for the NASPAC MDS certification program, a Board Member and an observer on the CMS STRIVE Task Force. She is currently on the Ohio Health Care Board of Directors, serves on the Executive Committee and Chairs the Convention Committee.
