MDS and Exception Review Update 2018

CMS will be implementing significant changes to the MDS 3.0 beginning October 1, 2018. These changes will impact nearly every section of the MDS including: Section A (Identification Information), Section C (Cognitive Pattern), Section GG (Functional Abilities and Goals), Section I (Active Diagnoses), Section J (Health Conditions), Section M (Skin Conditions), Section N (Medications), and Section O (Special Treatments, Procedures, and Programs). During this session, learn the details of the changes, best practices for implementation, and the impact of the changes on your team, and your community.

During this session, we will discuss the latest Exception Review trends. We will also discuss strategies to ensure accuracy of MDS documentation, and best practices to prepare for an Exception Review in your community.

Following this presentation, the participant will be able to:
* Discuss MDS changes to be implemented as of October 1, 2018
* Discuss strategies to successfully implement the October 1, 2018 MDS changes
* Discuss the most common reasons an assessment would not validate during an Exception Review
* Discuss best practices to prepare for an Exception Review, and quality assurance measures to ensure MDS documentation accuracy

Ms. Cassidy has over 24 years of long term care management experience. This experience includes roles as Charge Nurse, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Corporate Clinical Compliance/Risk Manager and Vice President of Clinical Quality. Ms. Cassidy is also a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Ohio. She has worked with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, specializing in MDS, as a DAVE2 surveyor. Ms. Cassidy is certified in gerontological nursing, and is a Certified Resident Assessment Coordinator through the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators. She received her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Miami University. A major focus of Ms. Cassidy?s is to raise awareness of the MDS process, correct coding, and reimbursement. She is the past president of OANAC (Ohio Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators) and served as a Senior Reviewer for the American Health Care Association Silver Quality Awards. She is also the proud recipient of the American College of Health Care Administrators, Ohio Chapter, 2017 Educator of the Year Award.
