11.5 CEs for NHA, Nurses

More than 2 years ago, CMS adopted both the 2012 Life Safety Code and the Healthcare Facilities Code which established new expectations for inspection, testing and maintenance of the many fire protection features found in long term care facilities. With this sweeping adoption there has been an evident tightening of the requirements through stricter implementation, resulting in more deficiencies for nursing facilities.

To address this, OHCA has developed an intensive 2-day training focused on the requirements of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code for skilled nursing centers. This training is designed for facility & maintenance managers, environmental services directors, administrators and long term care safety consultants.

The Life Safety Code established minimum criteria for many protective features and systems, including fire protection, generators, doors, building services, and maintenance activities. All this must be accomplished under the rubric that facilities achieve an acceptable degree of safety for all who live and work in our centers.

This unique program will help you understand practical applications of the Life Safety Code and learn from a life safety expert on what to prepare for during survey. This comprehensive program will examine all sections of the LSC applicable to skilled nursing, and provide forms, policies and best practice guides for use by healthcare organizations. Using real life examples and survey scenarios, you will explore how these codes apply to nursing facilities, discuss code changes and the increased inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) requirements, and review common violations.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own copies of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities Code to the boot-camp.

Topics Include:

LSC Origins & Organization; Smoke Compartments; Construction Types; Additions & Renovations; Operating Features; Means of Egress; Door Locks; Fire Barriers; Hazardous Areas; Building Services; Fire Protection Systems; Understanding CMS; Challenges in Implementing the New Requirements of the 2012 LSC; Key Interpretations; Documentation Needed for a Successful Survey
