Reducing Litigation Risk for SNF & AL
12-month series beginning January 21
This wide-ranging 12-month compliance and risk management focused series will provide the healthcare professional with insight into the long-term care litigation process and best practices for avoiding lawsuits. Instructors will include a LTC Legal Nurse Consultant with guest sessions by experienced nursing home defense attorneys. Monthly discussion will include the LTC ?Hot Topics? of falls and accidents, elopement, resident changes in condition, internal investigations, incident management, medication management, communication practices and fraud and abuse. Checklists and tools will be provided to assist in assessing and monitoring areas of high litigation risk within the facility.

Review step-by-step what to expect in a LTC provider lawsuit, including understanding the process and foundational legal requirements. Co-presented by a seasoned LTC attorney.
February 18 - F880 - Incident Investigations
Explore the detailed components of a comprehensive investigation process as well as tips for successful interviews. The presenter will guide the facility through implementing effective and detailed investigation processes.
March 18 - Incident Management
This third session will guide facility staff through the step-by-step process of incident management including resident assessment needs, important notifications, and implementing an appropriate response to the investigation findings.
April 15 - Falls & Accidents
Review the elements of a successful accident/fall management program including the components of what constitutes an ?unavoidable? fall or accident, intervention considerations and documentation strategies.
May 20 - Elopement
Explore essential components for elopement management including, but not limited to identifying, evaluating, intervening, and monitoring elopement risk management.
June 17 - Managing Changes in Resident Condition
Delve into key issues around changes in conditions in post-acute care settings. Topics of discussion will include regulatory requirements, common risk areas and standards of care for notification of a resident change in condition.
July 15 - Medication Management
Review the regulatory requirements and standards of care for effective medication management and best practices for preventing medication errors and for the monitoring of adverse effects.
August 19 - Policies and Procedures
Discover guidelines for facility policy and procedure development, policy review/revision, and effective strategies for implementation. Gather tips on techniques for monitoring, updating and training staff on policies and procedures.
September 16 - Communication Practices
Address essentials in post-acute care clinical communication practices. Techniques will be shared for effective methods of communicating concise, but comprehensive information related to resident status and treatment responses.
October 21 - Hot Topics in LTC Fraud and Abuse
New and seasoned leaders will gain insight into industry risks and potential mitigation strategies with skills developed in identifying and addressing potential vulnerabilities related to recent government payers? fraud and abuse trends.
November 18 - Compliance & Ethics Program Risk Assessment Essentials
Observe key components of an effective SNF Compliance & Ethics Program with emphasis on conducting a facility Risk Assessment to drive development of the facility-specific Compliance Work Plan.
December 16 - Tips & Recommendations if You Get Sued
In the final session in the Reducing Litigation Risk series, we?ll focus on strategies for preparing for the litigation process and preparing for depositions and trial testimony. Co-presented by a seasoned LTC attorney.
